Who really "founded" Singapore?

With relation to the topic, Raffles (in my opinion) was the one that founded Singapore.According to the dictionary, the word "founder" means someone who establishes a business, organization, school etc. In the 19th century Raffles came and chose Singapore as a trading settlement for where it was situated. A treaty was also signed between Sultan Hussein and the Temenggong with the British allowing them to build a settlement in the southern part of Singapore island, under the influence of Raffles. Not long after, the treaty that was known as the "Anglo-Dutch Treaty" or the "Treaty of London" was made and for this, the British had three ports in the Straights of Melaka. The trade was lucrative and more immigrants came to Singapore. The population of Singapore then soared and cause the prosperity of Singapore today.

I therefore conclude that Raffles was the founder of Singapore.

Can you explain how the immigrants who came to Singapore made Sinagpore prosperous?

How can you define that Singapore's founder was Raffles? As maybe there are other founders beside Raffles before he founded Singapore...:)

Well they settled in Singapore and also traded. If there wasn't any immigrants at that time, the population won't have increased.

Founder means who establishes a business etc. The others like Farquhar and Crawfurd also played a part, but Raffles was the one that starting the whole trading settlement. So we can say in this term, he established a trading business and therefore he was the the rightful founder.

Well Singapore's trade with other countries were lucrative. Of course immigrants would not come settle here if Singpore was still a swamp and trying to earn a living was difficult.
